Investing in the environment RasGas launches new environmental facility
How a company deals with its waste management is a key element in maintaining a business's reputation. Companies are continually looking to ways in which their environmental credentials can be improved upon. As a leading energy company, dedicated to supporting environmental initiatives, RasGas Company Limited (RasGas) officially launched its $2.3 million waste management facility within the RasGas site at Ras Laffan on 4th March 2010. The new Inert Waste Storage Area has facilities for high-technology segregation, pre-processing and storage of ten different inert waste products such as tyres, activated carbon, paper, wood, batteries, waste oil and molecular sieves as well as the accurate measurement of waste during its storage, removal and recycling.
The high-technology facility is one of a range of projects undertaken by RasGas to optimise its waste management system. 'I am pleased to announce that in 2009 RasGas achieved a waste recycling level of 65 per cent - a real achievement in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry for the fourth consecutive year, as benchmarked by Shell Global Solutions, "said Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi, Managing Director - CEO, speaking at the inaugural ceremony, which was attended by Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLC) Director Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the RasGas Executive Leadership Team, RasGas environment department, RLC management and other guests."As a further demonstration of our long-term commitment to environment conservation, we have also installed 22 solar light panels as a renewable, clean source of perimeter lighting for the new facility."
As a company RasGas is committed to sustainable development and, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, it is working to ensure harmony between its commercial activities and the protection of the environment. As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme RasGas has made 2010 its 'Year of the Environment' and is implementing a range of projects and campaigns to continue its efforts to protect and preserve the environment, and to raise awareness of the issues among its employees and the general public. Speaking on the occasion RLC Director Sheikh Khalid said, 'It is commendable to see the initiatives by RasGas to provide an integrated approach to waste management in RasGas and in line with RLC's philosophy of managing its waste within the city".
As with all projects executed by RasGas the Inert Waste Storage Area was successfully implemented in 2009 following RasGas detailed waste management gap analysis in which a series of management, facilities and procedures improvements were identified. As a result, the RasGas Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group developed a comprehensive corporate waste management programme for recycling and minimising all waste generated by RasGas, including domestic waste in the company's residential compounds. |
