RasGas shares innovative ideas at gas processing conference

DOHA, QATAR - 12TH JANUARY 2010

Building on a strong commitment to sharing its knowledge with higher education institutions and industry peers, RasGas Company Limited (RasGas) is participating in the 2nd Annual Gas Processing Symposium, which takes place 11th-14th January 2010 in Doha, Qatar.

The symposium is focusing on sustainable development and meeting the challenges facing the gas industry in Qatar. Bringing together key academics and industry players, the event is being hosted by Qatar University's Gas Processing Center, under the patronage of His Highness the Heir Apparent of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

"RasGas is proud to be playing a part in the Gas Processing Center's 2nd Annual Gas Symposium. RasGas is strongly committed to supporting higher education in Qatar and has developed close links with a variety of higher education institutions in Qatar, "said Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi, RasGas Managing Director - CEO. "RasGas is an active partner in Qatar's drive for sustainable development. We are always seeking to take the initiative in steps to protect the environment, in order to realise the Qatar National Vision 2030."

As part of the Environmental Sustainability session on Tuesday 12th January, Chris Horne, RasGas Environmental Engineer, presented a paper on the company's innovative Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programme for monitoring leaks of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from its facilities. Titled 'The experience of using LDAR for monitoring fugitive emissions of volatile organic compounds with special reference to RasGas' experiences', the paper discusses RasGas' success in introducing new technology to address this highly topical issue. VOCs can lead to the formation of ground-level ozone, which has a negative impact on human health. RasGas’ LDAR programme has established procedures for monitoring and repairing VOC leaks from valves, pump and compressor seals, connectors and other equipment on the company's onshore liquefied natural gas processing (LNG) plants, in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

More than 200 global experts, academics and representatives from Qatar's gas industry are expected to attend the symposium. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry, HE Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah, delivered the keynote address. Over the four days there will be more than 50 papers, oral and poster presentations, keynote speeches, workshops and an exhibition.
